Tire
malfunction in Ford Explorers first noted in
Venezuela in 1998 & Saudi Arabia in
1999... while recall starts in August 2000
Ford
noted tire malfunction in Venezuela
in October 1998
and in Saudi Arabia
in August 1999.
The recall
program started in August
2000.
It appears that Ford
& Bridgestone-Firestone
were perhaps aware of tire problems,
consisting of tread
separation, with the Firestone
tires mounted on Ford
Explorers, before
the recall
was initiated in August 2000, according the Wall
Street Journal.
It was Sam Boyden
a researcher at State
Farm Insurance who first sent
e-mails to the National
Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA)
pointing to problems in the Firestone tires.
